DWC Practice Schedule

Just a reminder that we are planning on having DWC competitive practice tonight (Thursday).  If there are any weather cancellations, we will post on the Decorah Vikings Wrestling facebook page and this blog.  The next DWC Competitive practice will be Thursday, January 2nd. Fundamental practice will resume Monday, January 6th. Happy Holidays!

DWC competitive session - Friday night opportunity at Luther College

In addition to our regular DWC practices on Tuesday and Thursday, the "Competitive" session wrestlers will have an opportunity to practice and wrestle during Luther's home dual meet against Cornell on Friday, the 13th.  This practice will start at 6:30 pm in the Luther Wrestling room and will go until approximately 7:15 pm.  Following the 45 minute practice, they will wrestle two live matches as a group in front of the Luther crowd during intermission of the dual. We did this last year and the Luther fans and coaching staff really enjoyed it so Coach Mitchell invited us back this year. All DWC competitive session kids are encouraged to attend! Please wear your red DWC team shirt to practice. There is no cost to watch the dual...admission is free.  

Tuesday Practice - CHANGE!

Due to a home double dual Tuesday night, DWC will practice from 3:30-5:00 pm at Decorah MIDDLE School. There will be no berzerker practice.

Stats from the Mat - Book

Jodi Henning, owner of "Stats From the Mat" has books available for wrestling parents. Record your wrestler's bracket at every tournament.  Front half of the book is 4,5,8,16 & 32 Man brackets, back half is a directory of tournaments around Iowa.  An easy way to find out where to wrestle any weekend.  Stores in mom's purse, or in the wrestler's bag.  A great keepsake at the end of the season!   Made here in Decorah.  Jodi will deliver any orders to DWC practice, too!

Fundamental Practices begin Monday, November 18th!

A reminder that Fundamental practices for DWC begin Monday, November 18th from 6:30-7:30 pm at Decorah High School.  If you have not already registered online, please do so before practice.  There will also be a waiver that needs to be signed by a parent/guardian before your child participates. See you on the 18th!

Thursday Practice (Halloween) & Junior Berzerker Award

Halloween:
Due to trick-or-treating hours, DWC will have practice this Thursday from 3:30-4:45 pm.

Junior Berzerker Club
Tuesday, October 29th, we will start our Junior Berzerker Club night.  This club is dedicated to wrestlers that would like to get additional live wrestling and hard drilling in.  If you complete the entire season missing three or less Junior Berzerker sessions you will receive a DWC Junior Berzerker Club Members Only backpack.  You must make sure you sign out at the end of each session.  Sessions will be Tuesdays from 7:45-8:15 pm.  DWC members are free to leave practice at 7:45 pm if they do not wish to participate in the Junior Berzerker Club. 

"Swap" page

We have added a google doc "swap" page for anyone that has wrestling gear and/or apparel to sell or give away. There is also a "wanted" section. Make sure to include your contact information so buyer/seller can contact you. Please remove your information once item is sold/purchased. Link is on the left column of the blog in the same area as tournament website links. Thanks!

DWC Singlets

DWC will be placing a singlet order for anyone interested in a club singlet.  Cost is $55 and available in youth and adult sizes.  Deadline to order is 10/31/13. We have a handful of singlets in stock if you want to try on for sizing purposes - see a coach at practice.

DWC Reminders and Updates

The first night of registration and competitive session went well. We had a lot of excited kids ready to wrestle.

As a reminder, there are 3 parts to registering your wrestler for DWC.

1. Complete this form:  2013/14 Registration form

2. Sign waiver (at practice)

3. Pay registration ($100/session for competitive - $45/fundamental)

Registration, apparel sampling/try-ons and the swap meet will be on Thursday from 5:30-6:30 pm at the high school cafeteria.

Swap meet - Items may be dropped off as early as 5:00 pm.  Swap meet will begin at 5:30 pm. Please make sure your item(s) have a card attached to them with the price you are asking as well as your name.  If your item sells, you may pick up the $ at 6:30 pm.

If you are selling last years DWC singlet, we suggest a sale price of $25.

Team Gear/Apparel  - The last time to try on team apparel will be Thursday from 5:30-6:30 pm. I strongly suggest trying items on as some of these items run big (i.e. sweatpants).  Paper/pens are available to write sizes down.  Apparel can be ordered here:   http://www.alphaapparelcompany.com/pages/group-orders
Orders are due 10/31. At check-out, choose the "DWC Group Order - Free" shipping option and we will bring to practice when apparel is ready.

2013/14 DWC Information

Below is some important information for parents, please be sure to read in its entirety as there is A LOT of information. New this year is online registration AND online team gear ordering (see below).

DWC will continue with two wrestling levels – fundamental and competitive.   All practices will be held in the high school wrestling room this year.

Competitive Session

 Begins Tuesday, October 22nd

• Practices held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm.
• For grades K-8^th. 
• Cost is $100/session.
• Includes club tshirt and entry fee to Decorah Tournament
• USA Membership
• If participating in BOTH sessions, you will also receive entry into Luther Tournament and and one state tournament (USA or AAU).

Fundamental Session

• Begins Mid November - more details will be announced soon.
• Practices held Monday nights from 6:30-7:30 pm.  
• For grades K-3^rd only 
• Cost is $45 for the season. 
• Includes club tshirt and entry fee to Decorah Tournament

 Scholarships are available as well as multi-child discounts - please contact Coach Freidhof for more information.

Thursday

5:30-6:30 pm- Commons area/Decorah High School - Permission slips can be signed by parents/guardians, payment due. Samples of team gear available to try on and SWAP MEET.  The SWAP meet is your chance to sell/buy gently used wrestling items. Items may include DWC singlets, practice singlets, shoes, headgear, etc.  Please attach a notecard with your name and price on each item. If your item is sold, we will collect the money and card.  At the end of the swap meet, you can collect your money or unsold gear. ***if you are selling your DWC singlet from last season, we are suggesting a sale price of $25***

6:30-7:45 pm - practice

TEAM GEAR

New this year - all apparel ordering will be done online - no forms will be distributed. Clothing samples will be available from 5:30-6:30 on 10/22 and 10/24 in the high school commons area to try on.  Apparel order deadline is 10/31/13. practice schedule this week - note CHANGES!!

As a reminder, the last practice of the 2nd session is this Thursday. Please note the following for practices this week:

Both practices will be at the MIDDLE SCHOOL (the high school mats need to be rolled up this week so that is why we are changing location)

Practice on Tuesday will be normal time - 6:30-7:45 pm

Practice on Thursday will be 5-6:15 pm.  Following practice, we will hand out awards and ice cream treats (we should be finished up around 6:45 pm)

DWC practice Schedule this coming week

The Decorah Vikings took first as a team today at sectionals. Because of this, they will be wrestling at the regional duals this coming Tuesday. Practices for the week are as follows:

Competitive practice will be moved from Tuesday night to Monday night. Practice will be held at the Middle School wrestling room from 6:30-7:45 pm Monday night.  Thursdays practice is regular time and place - 6:30-7:45 pm at high school.

Fundamental practice will have their final practice this coming Thursday at the high school wrestling room from 5:30-6:30 pm with ice cream treats to follow. (No practice Monday night as there is a jv tournament)

Decorah Youth Tournament 2/10/13

Practices tonight - canceled

We just received word that practices (fundamental and competitive) will need to be canceled tonight due to the approaching storm.  The high school is canceling all of their activities, as well, so that students/children are not on the roads after dark. Be safe.

Reminders and Decorah Youth Tournament info

A friendly reminder that practices resume back to normal times this week: 6:30-7:45 pm for Competitive wrestlers (at high school).  Also, if you have not yet paid your second session dues, please do so asap. Thanks!!

Recognition Night - Details

Reminder that recognition night is this Thursday at Decorah High School. DWC participants will get in free that night with a ticket (handed out at Monday and Tuesday practice). If you missed practice, please see Coach Freidhof.

JV Matches Start at 6:15 PM - DWC members will need to be ready to be called to the commons area at around 6:30 PM

We ask all DWC members to wear their club t-shirt. (Grey shirt with name on back)

We will line up in the commons area and walk in on the mat and face the home crowd by grade level.

After the recognition, we encourage you to stay and watch senior night and cheer us on to a victory against Waukon.

Fundamental:

-Practice Monday, Jan. 7th 6:30-7:30 PM at high school (enter through front entrance walk towards new gym and take a left) (no changes in practice times for this group - only change is the location)

Competitive:
Tuesday, Jan. 8th 5-6:15 PM at high school (see directions above) (home hs dual vs Caledonia at Carrie Lee gym at 6:15 PM)
Friday, Jan. 11th 5:30-6:45 PM at high school (no practice on Thursday because coaches have double dual at Cresco that night)
Tuesday, Jan. 15th 3:30-4:45 PM at high school (home hs dual vs West Delaware at Carrie Lee gym at 5:45 PM)
Thursday, Jan. 17th 3:30-4:45 PM at high school (home hs dual vs Waukon - we will have DWC recognition that night)

Note from Decorah Wrestling Commander and Chief (aka Coach Freidhof) - "Due to the change of our practice location to the high school we are asking that parents not come into the the wrestling room unless you are going to help coach.  We are doing this for several reason.  First, the high school room does not have a lobby area built in but we do have a beautiful new large commons area right outside our door so instead of losing mat space and carrying more dirt in the room we would like to utilize the new facility.  Second, if you want to stay in the room then that encourages parents to be more involved and active.  If every parent grabbed a group of two and helped keep them focused we can probably get even more accomplished (we hope parents take this invite to help coach more).  Third, if parents want to talk with other parents during practice, the common area provides an area to do that and that eliminates extra noise for the coaches to have to coach over.  Thanks for your help with this and GO VIKES!!!"

Finally, a friendly reminder that second session payment for competitive wrestlers is now due. Please plan to pay at practice this week - $100.00 payable to DWC.  

DWC Recognition Night - Date Change

We have been informed that we need to change our DWC recognition night from Tuesday, January 8th (against Caledonia) to Thursday, January 17th.

Decorah High School will be wrestling in the high school gym against Waukon that night.

Note that DWC recognition night is for all DWC wrestlers - both competitive and fundamental participants. 

We will communicate more information closer to the date including details as to when to be there to line up, etc.  Plan to wear your grey DWC team shirt that night.  

Thursday practice changed to Friday!!!

Due to the high school wrestling dual against Charles City/Oelwein being held tomorrow night (originally scheduled for before Christmas but canceled due to the snow storm), DWC practice for tomorrow night will be held Friday at the high school from 5:30 to 6:45 PM. Please enter through the west parking lot doors (band hallway) turn left and enter practice gym and go through double doors into wrestling room.
